The little Chromatic Typewriter, a conceptual art piece, is out in the world and the feedback has been great. Although it does not paint, I've decided I can at least re-type my artist statement with the thing, so long as I can limit it to a paragraph. It ought to be equally decipherable as any other artist statement I've read lately.
I'm super excited about it. The reaction to the piece has been pretty special. It seems to be making a lot of people happy and it has started some great discussions on the translation of art into words and words into art.

I am really absolutely speechless about your typewriter. I have a BA in English, I'm a photographer, I have no words. But these -- thank you for this incredible, JOYFUL, brilliant contribution to the world. I am so fortunate to walk the earth at the same time as you.
absolutely speechless is the best way i can describe my reaction to this as well. as a photographer, painter, and sculptor, i am blown away by your typewriter for a number of reasons. this is along the lines of an idea i have had for sometime, but much more well thought out (and more importantly, actualized). like jessica, i would like to thank you for your "brilliant contribution to the world".
Great work! This is an interesting approach to think images as writing and wiritng as images. In German there is a good term for this kind of notational iconicity: Schriftbildlichkeit. thx!
Do you have a video that shows how it works?
Brilliant piece of art, it enables to write a painting :)
I wanted to vote for you but..
To vote for your favorite artwork get the iPhone app here.
Unfortunately the voting is Apple Fanboys only. I can't vote for you because I believe in OpenSource and thus don't have an iPhone, sorry!
Better next year!
Wow, this is really brilliant. what a cool idea. I'm not an artist, but as a geek, it's SUCH a neat idea.
i graduated from fairhaven college with a combined major in fine art and creative writing. i'm insanely jealous that you came up with this when it would have been my perfect thesis project. I LOVE IT!
did you ever think about what would happen if you typed out a book on it? what would Tom Robbins "A Still Life with Woodpecker" look like for instance?
This is delightful! And wonderful! And exquisite! Any plans to make a chromatic keypad app for iPhone, etc?
This is a thing of beauty! What a wonderful twist on the utilitarian somberness of the vintage typewriter with the whimsy of color. That it works is a wonderful bonus. It brings a whole new level to the concept of making the old new again. I agree with Lauren G. about an app with this joyful way to play with words and color. I am saving a copy of your picture (if you don't mind?!?) in my files of wonderful things.
Hello!
This is extraordinary! I'm amazed, and inspired - it's wonderful and beautiful!
I will vote for it everyday!
All the best, I hope you win
i love how different mediums can extrapolate our inner thoughts and worlds through them. this reinvention you constructed pushes that envelope. it's brilliant! when can i get my hands on one?? ;)
What a beautiful contribution to the art world.
I would love to see a video of this.
LOVE this concept - it is truely amazing. If it were only so!
COMPLETE AWESOMENESS!! i would love to see a video of it working. you have come up with an amazing idea that is comparable to steve jobs. what a brillant idea! hope to see more about it. hugs, lura
I am a mild synesthete (mostly I see color, texture, and movement in place of sound and emotional atmosphere), so this concept is especially appealing to me. Super cool!
I really love this piece! It's beautiful & I enjoy the dialogue of art & writing...
Hey Tyree, I love your piece! fab, fab, fab. I have typewriter lust! I also just voted for you too, I just finished a vintage typewriter design for the Berkeley Public Library's Annual Author Dinner. My client sent along your link. You have made my day! I also grew up in B'ham, and come back for visits to your art collective. Keep up the good work in B'ham.
-Carol B.
Wow! What a great work you did.
I'm publishing at my blog.
I would like to know about people with synesthesia reactions.
I voted and hope you'll win.
Thank for your comments and support, everyone! I hope this little note finds you all well and in great spirits!
Brilliant!
Happy Color Therapy Month--and congratulations on your brilliant Chromatic Typewriter! As a writer and color therapist writer (aka Rainbow Writer--see www.rainbowwriter.com), I am in awe of your gorgeous creation. I have a small collection of old manual typewriters, but not one makes me smile like this one! Rainbow Blessings, Eleyne-Mari
Fantastic! This makes me smile. Simple and important as that! Well done!
Will you be making more of these to sell?
There are two currently: one will be traveling through Asia and Europe this year and next. The other is staying in the US for exhibition and competition. I don't have plans for any others at this time. Thanks for your question!
Hi , very beautiful work. I added it to my blog at http://emergentlocality.com/2012/04/chromatic-typewriter/ .
Hello, I would buy a painting of Chromatic Typewriter, but I'm living in Brazil. How do I buy? thank you
Hello Luana, et al: I have posters of the typewriter available for sale on the website: http://www.tyreecallahan.com
Thanks for your interest!
I would like to know if has a possibility of buy a chromatic typewriter like these? Do you sell machines like these?
This is the coolest fucking thing Ive ever seen. Great job man.
Hello Tyree, I had a dream about a year ago that I had a typewriter that typed colors rather than words. When I woke up, I wrote it down because I thought 'what a good idea!' I need to find that note. I can't believe you actually made it!
Good going. Rhonda
If you made these for sale, I would buy one. Soooooo cool! Saw on Pinterest and had to come take a closer look and tell you I think you're a genius!
Oh, wow... I so want to work out how to make this idea into an actuality! Would that be violating any copyright or anything?
Thought you might enjoy seeing a thing I made inspired by your work:

Does it actually work, I can't see how the image would be typed, looks more like a water colour?
My son and I are autistic and when I saw your typewriter, I thought it would be an amazing expression tool for sensory seeking kids of all neuro types. Doesn’t look like you were able to manufacture it though. If you ever think of doing a Kickstarter for it, please let me know.
Very intrigued by the the Chromatic typewriter. Have been an artist for 70 years and am now facing advanced Macular Degeneration.
So am curious, as the paintings shown are too small to see, if the typewriter creates a dot or slash when producing the painting.
Please make a kickstarter or something to make this something others can access….its amazing and I would love to try it out one day!
